Leïla Pile

Leïla Pile lives and works in Brussels. In 2018, she earned a Master’s degree in Textile Design from ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels. Her work has recently been exhibited at the Fondation Boghossian (Villa Empain) in Brussels, at Espace LRS52, and during the Art au Centre #14 parcours in Liège. She has been an artist-in-residence at ISELP and RAVI. In 2022, she received the Prize of the Biennale Contextile in Portugal and was selected by the Salon de Montrouge in Paris.
Her textile practice is conceptual, performative, and artisanal. Her own body plays a central role as a measuring instrument. Through various media, she preserves the memory of a gesture and explores the possibilities of a line’s existence in relation to space. Leïla describes her artistic process as an investment in the specific characteristics of each location, investigating the dimensions and flows of the environment. Through a rigorous protocol of walking, measuring, drawing, dyeing, weaving, and rolling, she gets to know the space and elevates the material. Her body serves as a unit of measurement for her surroundings, with steps, fathoms, hands, and other units of measurement integrated into drawings and visual scores of woven strips and dyed threads. These compositions follow a rhythm reminiscent of conceptual music, where one unit succeeds another, intersects, or desynchronizes.
